The Dark Brown Leghorn

The lesser-known Leghorn cousin

History

The Dark Brown Leghorn is an APA accepted variety, but is not commonly found in backyards or show halls. The livestock conservancy lists non-industrial strain Leghorns on their watchlist as a "recovering" breed.

Opportunities For Preservation

Our interest in the Dark Brown Leghorn began due to the color genetics they possess. They were intended to be part of a cross breeding project. As we got to know the Dark Brown Leghorn as a breed, we saw value in promoting and preserving this lesser known variety. Dark Brown Leghorns are built on the eb allele at the E locus. The eb allele has the potential to create beautiful patterns when crossed to a different breed with the right complimentary genes.

Our Leghorns were sourced from Master Exhibitor Jeff Shenk. We are working with a hand-selected trio and intend to exhibit this variety at APA sanctioned shows in 2025.

The Livestock Conservancy has a nice page that describes the Leghorn quite well. https://livestockconservancy.org/leghorn-chicken/

Our non-industrial strain are not high volume XL egg producers like hatchery quality Leghorns are, but they do have a more pleasant temperament. And you will not find this color available through any hatchery!
